FAQs about hotels in Rio de Janeiro

Sassy City of Samba

Home of samba, Brazil’s 2nd largest city is sassy, seductive and spectacular. The Rio Carnival is legendary the world over for outrageous costumes and infectious rhythms.

Host of the 2014 World Cup final in Maracanã stadium and the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, Rio de Janeiro is forward-thinking. High rises line Ipanema beach and you can find dozens of rollerbladers on the promenades at any time.

The hottest spot is Copabacana, a great place to try biscoito globo, a typical Rio beach snack. Sip a caipirinha here while the sun sets over the bay and mountains – it's unforgettable, but the fun doesn't end there. Clubbing in Rio is fantastic and ranges from techno to traditional bossa nova. Bohemian beats can be found in Santa Teresa and Lapa, where trams pass over a double-arched viaduct.

Overlooking all this from Corcovado mountain is iconic Christ the Redeemer, welcoming the world to Rio with arms outstretched. Take a cable car up to this statue on the edge of lush Tijuca Park for incredible views. Accessed by cable car, Sugar Loaf Mountain is also not to be missed.

Rio de Janeiro Airport is well linked to the ‘ Marvelous City’, but traffic can be manic, so leave enough time to reach it from your Rio hotel, apartment or hostel booked through Booking.com.

We stayed in Recreio and Copacabana in Rio.Both are nice but different beach places.Copacabana is more crowded,Recreio is more silent and peaceful. Both were our favourites.Recreio is a little far from Rio center and other places,Copacabana is in the middle of action. We recommend to take accomodation near Copacabana for easy moving everywhere. We used Uber what is very cheap in Rio and easy to get. Both places we had flats which we prefer for hotels.More privacy and you can cook if you like. In Rio is also easy to get around with subway.Eating places are everywhere for every taste and price. We liked music clubs in Copacabana.

    I love Rio. Especially Copacabana.

I love Rio. Especially Copacabana. It is a great place to arrive in Brazil and to spend a few days before leaving the country. Uber and taxi work great. Be aware of rush hours thought. Don’t hesitate to ask the drivers for recommendations. Carioca, natives from Rio, are very friendly and proud of their city. And if you like soccer, it is a great way to start good chats along the way.

Rio is one of those fabulous iconic world cities that must be visited at least once in a person's lifetime. One downside in Brazil for visitors from certain countries is that a real Italian Cappuccino is almost impossible to find!

It's a nice city with good infrastructure. There are many tourists, many shops, and friendly Brazilian people. I enjoyed my stay. Every public service person I met wants to prove that Rio is safe and pleasant, unlike the negative publicity in the international media.

Rio de Janeiro is a city of sharp contrasts, vibrant,...

Rio de Janeiro is a city of sharp contrasts, vibrant, chaotic, beautiful, and at times deeply confronting. The traffic is relentless at all hours. However, central Rio looks relatively clean during the day; by night, the reality takes a different turn. Rats swarm the streets after dark; it’s not just a few, but dozens at a time. Homelessness is highly visible in the city centre. As a nurse working in inclusion health, my eyes are trained to see the signs of untreated illness and suffering, and many people sleeping rough are clearly unwell. You’ll see individuals resting in metro stations, on benches, and at bus stops. They’re not threatening and mostly keep to themselves, but it’s distressing to witness so many people struggling to survive without support or care. At the same time, Rio offers undeniable beauty. Visiting Christ the Redeemer is genuinely moving, and the panoramic views across the city are unforgettable. The beaches Copacabana and Ipanema are iconic and full of energy. But even there, the inequalities are impossible to ignore. People from nearby favelas walk along the sand, trying to make a living by selling snacks, drinks, and handmade items. One young woman approached me selling sweets. When I declined, she leaned in and quietly asked if I wanted cocaine or crack instead. That wasn’t an isolated experience. Walking along Copacabana, I was repeatedly offered drugs. Sometimes it started with cigarettes and quickly turned into marijuana, crack, or even Viagra. Be careful around Praça XV de Novembro. I had my iPhone snatched out of my hand by a man on a mountain bike who rode up behind me and grabbed it without warning. Rio is a place that leaves a strong impression. It’s not always comfortable, but it’s absolutely real.

    What a wonderful city!

What a wonderful city! Not as dangerous as people suggest if you use common sense, avoid dark empty streets, the beach at night, don't flash jewelry, keep a tight grip on your iPhone. Don't pass up the feijoada on Saturday. If you like music, go for sambas de roda at Pedra do Sal or Beco do Rato or Arcos de Lapa.

Modern hotel with a restaurant and bar, as well as a pool. The room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. Wi-fi was fast and reliable and AC worked well. Staff was also friendly which is always a plus. The hotel is in Barra Tijuca so away from the centre and touristic hot spots of Ipanema and Copacabana. So probably best suited for people looking for a place away from the hustle and bustle.

I loved the location, the style of the hotel (instagram-worthy!) and the amazingly comfortable bed. We were also able to take bikes for free (incl. free waters from the hotel) and cycle along Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana beach - a once in a lifetime experience. The hotel restaurant is also very nice, great cocktails - and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Location (not your typical Rio hotel on Copacabana/Ipanema), this hotel is literally on a very nice small beach (not private, but easily accessible and safe), great breakfast with lots of options, comfortable room with great sea view. Very helpful concierge desk. Bikes available for a stroll over Leblon/Ipanema beaches. Good restaurants on the resort.
